Airport Simulator 3: Day & NightĪerofly FS 2 does seem a bit too dependent on add-ons and third-party content going forward. Some areas like Chicago Meigs Field and Northeastern USA are paid, but highly detailed. Previously it covered California, Nevada, and Arizona.

The free DLC comprises of high-resolution assets for the southwest US, which now includes Utah and Colorado. As with any flight simulator, there’s some paid and free DLC.
This provides a healthy selection of aircraft from personal, professional, and military (both historical and modern). There’s a variety of aircraft, with 16 included aircraft including the Aermacchi MB-339, Airbus A320, ASG 29 glider, B737-500, B747-400, Baron 58, C172, Corsair F4U, Extra 330, F-15 Strike Eagle, F-18, Jungmeister, King Air C90 GTx, Learjet 45, P-38 Lightning, Pitts S-2B biplane, Sopwith Camel, and Swift S1 glider. So I took a deep breath, pushed my expectations aside and set out to discover new lands. Overall, it felt like a simple flying game, and while I’m totally fine with flying games (and even think they are needed to get younger people into this hobby), I was still wondering what Aerofly FS2 could offer me over X-Plane 11 and Prepar3D.

For a start, the user interface appeared really large on my 1920×1080 screen (as if it was made for a much smaller touch screen), plus several options I was used to seeing in simulators were missing, especially regarding weather, starting position, and flight planning. To be honest, my first impressions were still rather negative when I first installed Aerofly FS2. That was it, for quite some time, until Dominic emailed me with ideas of a possible review. Positive things I read about, like very good frame rates (FPS), I rejected when I saw screen shots of the scenery: “Well, that’s just static photo scenery”, I said, “autogen only in very few areas, everywhere else is flat, no animations of car traffic or water – no surprise really that FPS are good!” Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 You see, I had judged Aerofly FS2 way back when it was initially released as early access, and my ill informed decision was based solely on some screen shots of the user interface, weather settings (simpler even than X-Plane), and aircraft without (it seemed) any system depth. I did not know much about Aerofly FS2 before I started this review, but like most people with limited information, I came to an uninformed opinion and simply said, “I won’t use that”. Aerofly FS 2 Flight Simulator comes from IPACS, a German developer who previously released Aerofly FS and Aerofly RC that lay the foundation of what makes this such a solid game. Death Valley and all of the intricate details of the Californian desert is another particularly impressive area on offer. Furthermore, such iconic cities of California as San Francisco, Oakland, and Los Angeles are meticulously detailed, including many skyscraper buildings and 3D trees below. You can expect to see many of the major tourist attractions such as the Golden Gate Bridge with the beautifully textured water of the Pacific Ocean below it – although we should note, the water itself is “still shot” and not animated as in other flight sims. For example, if we look at the original default scenery package, the Southwestern states of the United States – which covers essentially California up to the state of Washington, including Nevada and Arizona. And what’s more, for basic default scenery, the detail on offer is really quite impressive. There are several add-ons for purchase, however, including the Northeastern region of the United States and Switzerland. In the basic download, high res sceneries of Utah, Colorado, and much of the Southwestern United States are available. After all, aside from the vehicles themselves, it is virtual skies you will be flying through and the visuals you will witness from the air that makes one program stand out from another. 22 aircraft included: EC135 and Robinson R22 Beta II helicopters, F-15, F-18, Aermacchi MB-339, King Air C90 GTx, Learjet 45, Extra 330, Pitts S-2B biplane, Bücker Jungmeister, Corsair F4U, P-38 Lightning, Sopwith Camel, ASG 29 and Swift S1 gliders, Dash-8 Q400 (available as free DLC), Highly detailed and interactive 3D cockpits, Adjustable cockpit lighting at night time, Realistic flight physics, Interactive Flight school for learning the basics of flying, High resolution aerial images and over 200 airports for the South West of the United States, World wide elevation and aerial images, Display terrain features like mountains, lakes and cities for easy VFR navigation, Route editor for easy flight planning.
